SC sets 31st July as deadline for NRC publication

The deadline for the publication of the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam has been set to July 31 by the Supreme Court . The apex court also said that the deadline won't be extended at any cost.

The hearing was made by the bench comprising of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and S Nariman.

Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi also said that the upcoming Lok Sabha elections should not hamper the NRC publication procedure and a meeting between NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela, Assam government and the Election Commission has been ordered by the top court to be held within seven days.

The top Court must be informed about the outcome of the meeting on February 5.

The hearing has been made on the  report submitted by the NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela on January 11 .

According to Hajela's report out of the 40 lakh left out 36.2 lakh have filed claims for inclusion of their names in the final NRC.
