Seelampur Violence: Delhi Police Arrested 6 People

The Delhi Police on Wednesday arrested six people in connectionwith the violence that erupted in Seelampur following protests over theCitizenship Amendment Act, as reported by news agency PTI.

According to the report, prohibitory orders under Section 144 ofthe Criminal Procedure Code were also issued in the North East district in viewof the law and order situation.

Police informed that the protest began at around 12 pm onTuesday and initially they held a "silent protest" against the new citizenshiplaw for an hour. But later as things began to wrap up, a few unidentified,bare-chested youths hurled bricks at police personnel who were keeping an eyeon the gathering. Soon, thereafter, some crowds vandalized buses, triggeringpolice to retaliate with lathi-charge and teargas. A public toilet next to apolice picket was also set on fire. The police personnel had responded byfiring tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.

The Delhi police used drones as the violence erupted to monitorthe situation and identify potential trouble zones. At least 12 policepersonnel were injured.

The violence comes just days after the Delhi Police crackdownagainst students and locals who gathered at Jamia Millia Islamia University toprotest against the CAA.

On Sunday evening, several students of Jamia Millia Islamia wereinjured as police entered their campus and lathi-charged them after protestsagainst the CAA in South Delhi turned violent.
