Separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani quits Hurriyat Conference

Separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, the showman of Kashmir's separatist politics for last three decades, has resigned from the All Party Hurriyat Conference on Monday.

Geelani was a part of Hurriyat conference since 1993.

The leader has blamed the "present situation" for the step without mentioning specific reasons for his resignation. Geelani, was appointed the life-time chairman of the party in 2003, has not mentioned the specific reasons for his resignation.

The move is likely to cause major significance and changes for separatist politics since the Centre ended its special status under Article 370 divided Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories.

Geelani said in an audio message released today said, "In view of the current state of the Hurriyat Conference, I am announcing my complete dissociation from the forum. In this context I have already sent a detailed letter to all constituents of the forum,"

90-year-old Geelani has been keeping unwell since last few months.
