The Sikkim Progressive Youth Forum (SPYF) on Saturday said that they would launch a state-wide movement against the recent switching of Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) legislators to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM).
SPYF has announced that as a part of a series of state-wide protest, it would start from a mass-protest rally on Sunday in Gangtok.
SPYF member, Shankar Sharma said that the mandate of the people has been overlooked in the recent political development in the state. He further said that the people have been considered as the most powerful in democracy and it is the people who choose their representatives to work in their interest.
He also stated that the SDF has been kept in opposition as people voted for SKM but due to the defection of SDF legislators to another party that received 1.62 percent votes became the main opposition party in the assembly adding that if the people’s representatives would not respect the people’s mandate then there was no use of the election.
He said that instead of conducting election, the representatives could be selected through tender or auction saying that the present defection was totally unacceptable.
Sharma later said that they have decided to take the movement ahead through the Citizen Forum against defected MLAs and that it is an open forum for all to come together. He said that their movement will continue until these defected MLAs resign on moral grounds.
