Speculation in Rife Over Modi Cabinet Reshuffle, Meetings to Begin Today

Speculation is rife that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is planning to reshuffle his cabinet. According to a report of Times Now, the Prime Minister will begin holding assessment meetings or consultations with the ministers sector-wise from today onwards.

The report said that during such meetings, performance will be reviewed or a discussion will take place on ideation and road forward.

The PM is also reportedly planning to take the load off ministers, who have been handling several ministries.

Here are the probable five reasons why the PM is going ahead with the Cabinet reshuffle now:

  1. COVID-19 daily caseload has slipped below one-lakh mark
  2. COVID-19 second wave has come as a wake-up call
  3. Image makeover is required amid Opposition’s attacks
  4. Many sectors need rejuvenation after COVID-19 shock
  5. No reshuffle has taken place since the PM term in 2019 began

This may be noted that the report has come amid speculation regarding changes in the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet and in the party structure ahead of the 2022 Assembly Elections.

UP CM Yogi Adityanath is expected to meet Prime Minister Modi this morning and BJP chief JP Nadda in the afternoon.

Sources suggest that the role of former Union minister Jitin Prasada, who jumped ship from the Congress to the BJP earlier this week, will also be discussed during Adityanath’s meetings with the central BJP leadership.

Meanwhile, speculations are also on rife that former Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal might also be inducted into the cabinet of the Narendra Modi government at the Centre.

During a press conference held on June 3 by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, he said that Sarbananda Sonowal will be given a new responsibility by the central leadership of BJP.

He said Sonowal’s experience as a former chief minister and a former Union minister will definitely be used by the party.

Sonowal was the Union sports minister in the Modi government from 2014 to 2016, before taking charge as the chief minister of Assam, a post he held from 2016 till last month.
