Sri Lankan Navy Arrests Indian Fishermen

Sri Lankan navy on Friday apprehended six Tamil Nadu fishermen for allegedly straying into the Sri Lankan waters, stated an official release of the Tamil Nadu fisheries department.

The statement further added that the fishermen from Nambuthalai in Ramanathapuram district were detained near Nedhuntheevu for crossing into the island nation’s waters.

“Sri Lankan Navy who were patrolling the area registered cases against the six fishermen for catching fish in their territory and took them to Kangasenthurai,” the statement added.

It may be mentioned here that as territories on the sea are not clearly demarcated, straying of Indian and Sri Lankan fisherman into each others’ waters is still an unsolving issue.
