Tea labourers’ sudden death stirs sensation in Doom Dooma

The sudden death of three female tea labourers on Thursday has stirred sensation in the entire region of Bordubi tea estate in Doom Dooma.

According to reports, four women labourers, namely, Filmiya Sai Murum (45), Sarothi Khariya (44), Dirang Sai Murum (65) and Agatha Remis (35), collapsed while plucking tea leaves. The four women although were rushed to the Bordubi Tea Estate Hospital, but due to deteriorating health conditions they were taken to a private hospital in Doom Doom’s Rupai.

However, Filmiya, Sarothi and Dirang died at the hospital while Agatha had been critically ill.

Meanwhile, the survivor, Agatha, who is improving now, has informed Pratidin Time that after finishing the task of plucking leaves, all the four women had lunch with homemade cucumber, pumpkin, fern and rice; but the cucumber was extremely bitter. It was after some time that all the four labourers collapsed, informed the survivor.

Although the incident has been alleged to have taken place due to food poisoning, however, no concrete proof has come to light till now.

Doom Dooma MLA Durga Bhumij had visited the families of the victims to take stock of the situation. The MLA has urged the government of Assam to order a high level inquiry into the matter and to provide compensation to the families of the three dead labourers.
