The Assam government has indicated that Guwahati might undergo complete lockdown if the COVID-19 cases spike in another few days. It has been witnessed that hundreds of cases have been detected without travel history which creates chaos amongst the citizens.

Briefing the media persons, state health minister Pijush Hazarika said that the situation in Guwahati is worsening day by day. The minister also expressed concern over the fact that the new cases have been detected from different parts of the city, including government offices, shopping complex, hospitals etc.

The minister further requested the people not to visit the city for few days and also the citizens should stay at home. "People don't follow rules so the number of community-spread cases in Guwahati is increasing day by day. I request people to follow lockdown rules properly. I came to know that cases have been detected in PWD chief engineers' office, banks, malls and other places of Guwahati. This is the first stage of community spread. So we should follow the rules strictly, then only we can stop it from turning into a pandemic in Guwahati," the minister said.

He further stated that If total lockdown is imposed in Guwahati, it will be a great loss for many sectors, especially the commerce and education adding that people do not wear masks properly and also not maintaining social distancing. He also added that at present lockdown has been imposed in 11 wards but if the cases seen a spike of cases in other areas too, then total lockdown will be imposed in the city.

"Strict action will be taken against those who don't follow the rules. As of now, Guwahati is the most affected in comparison to other places of Assam," the minister added.
