Triple Talaq Bill Tabled in Lok Sabha; Cong, AIMIM Oppose

The Congress opposed the new bill that was tabled by the Narendra Modi-led NDA-II government to ban Instant Triple Talaq in the Lok Sabha on Friday.

The party said the Triple Talaq bill lacks direction to safeguard the interest of Muslim women and push gender equality in the country, reports said.

Earlier, Union Environment Miniter Prakash Javadekar had said the Modi government is determined to bring a new bill on the Triple Talaq issue. The Union Cabinet will discuss the bill against Instant Triple Talaq today. If cleared, the new bill will replace an ordinance that was issued earlier this year.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Friday attacked the ruling BJP government in Lok Sabha as the new bill against instant triple talaq makes the practice among Muslim couples a penal offence.

Under the proposed law, giving instant triple talaq will not only be illegal and void but also attract a jail term of three years for the husband.
