Tripura: 4,400 Bru Refugees To be Repatriated

A total of 4,400 Bru refugees, taking shelter in six camps atKanchanpur of North Tripura are likely to be repatriated in the month of October,said an official of the Home Department of Mizoram.

According to the official, the ninth and the final phase ofrepatriation of over 26,100 refugees, lodged at six relief camps in NorthTripura district shall commence from October 1 and the decision was taken at ajoint monitoring group meeting on Bru Repatriation held at New Delhi onSeptember 6.

The meeting was chaired by special secretary (internalsecurity), Ministry of Home Affairs, AP Maheswari. He approved in principle torelease a sum of Rs. 350crore for the final phase of Bru repatriation from sixrelief camps in Tripura.

The official further informed that the approved amount would cover the rehabilitation package expenses, including Rs. 4lakh for each family, Rs. 1.5 lakh each as housing assistance, Rs. 5000 per month for each resettled Bru family in Mizoram and free ration for two years.

The government of Mizoram has rranged the transportation of Bru familiesto send back to their states, the official said.

The Mizoram government has conducted the identification of Brufamilies from July 3 till July 20 this year at six relief camps in Tripuraduring which over 26,100 people were identified as the bonafide residents ofMizoram.
