Tripura: One Dies in Protest Over Rehabilitation of Bru Refugees

A person died in the alleged police firing in Tripura as protests over mass resettlement of Bru refugees turned violent on Saturday. Several others reportedly injured in the firing.

Police opened fire to control the violent protesters in Tripura when Joint Movement Committee (JMC) members staged a protest on National Highway 8.

The deceased has been identified as Srikanta Das. Two others protesters also suffered injuries and are in a critical condition, reported India Today.

On Saturday, JMC members blocked the road at Panisagar sub-division under North Tripura district while protesting against the mass Bru resettlement, the report stated.

The situation soon spiralled out of control and took a violent turn with attempt made to block the National Highway as part of the strike, which entered the fifth day on Saturday.

The protest was staged against the rehabilitation of Bru refugees being done in the area which could lead to problems. Demands were rife to rehabilitate the Bru refugee population to other areas as well, which led to the blocking of the national highway.

According to sources, some police personnel have also sustained injuries when protesters attacked them. Angry protesters even torched police vans.
