Breaching the security, two inmates- Swarna Kumar Tripura and Jewel Tripura, who were behind bars for arms smuggling, escaped Sabroom sub-divisional jail on Saturday.

They jumped the wall of the jail in which they were lodged and escaped through a nearby stretch. The jailbreak, which exposed the lack of security at the jail, suggests that the accused must have been at work for several days.

But, surprisingly, none of the officials, responsible forregular inspection, noticed it. When the jail officials found the two inmatesmissing, they launched a search for them. They soon discovered few things inthe wall of the jail. Police was promptly informed. But, the casual approachtowards security of the jail in the state has been exposed once again.Meanwhile, Sabroom Police has launched a massive search operation in the area.

So far, none from jail Police has been suspended. Both Swarna Kumar alias Amit and Jewel were arrested from Shakbari in Shantirbazaar with a country-made gun, 16 rounds of cartridges, Bangladeshi currency and SIM cards and other tools along with sharp weapons from their possession early this month. During grilling, Jewel admitted that they had more arms and ammunitions which were recovered by Police later.

Swarna Kumar, the main accused in the murder of a Policeman named Ankrai Mog of Shakbari in 2014, had managed to escape from the Central jail in December, 2016. He was involved in several theft cases and used to make country made guns and sold them in the market.
