The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) will stage statewide protest against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill on Thursday evening. Members of the organisation will participate in the torch rally against the Centre’s move to re-introduce the CAB.
“Thousands of AASU supporters, members and leaders will take to the streets across the State raising their voices against the implementation of the controversial bill,” informed an AASU member on Thursday morning.
The Bill seeks to grant Indian citizenship to the people belonging to the Hindus, Jains, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Parsis who have become the victims of religious persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan and entered India on or before December 31st, 2014.
It may be mentioned here that people of Assam as well as other Northeastern States have been continuously opposing the CAB.
