The tribal languages of North East are facing a serious threat of extinction and 196 languages of India are in danger out of which 80 tribal languages of North East are also facing the risk.

It may be mentioned that 80 languages of eight states of Northeast are facing the serious threat and 21 mother languages are on the verge of being extinct. Along with national entity, the tribal languages are on the verge of extinct in Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, Meghalaya and Nagaland other than Assam.

According toa recent survey, the numbers of Naga Taba tribe of Manipur have come down to870. On the other hand, the number of Naga Poyome tribe of Manipur has 3000people and the number of people who have kept alive the language of Moyon tribeis 3700.

Moreover,the number of Chinte tribe of Manipur who has kept alive its language is 10,200, Nathini Tribe 13,000 and Posori tribe is 17,000.

As per thesurvey, Meghalaya has 34 tribes out of which many mother language are in theverge of extinct.  The population ofEtong tribe in Meghalaya at present is 4,600 and the number of people who havekept alive the Dojongha tribe of Meghalaya is 11,000.

The above mentioneddata are just an example but there are around as many as 80 tribes who arefacing serious threat of extinct of mother languages.
