Akhil Gogoi blames Big Dam for Assam Flood

Pratidin Bureau

KMSS Chief Akhil Gogoi on Wednesday said that big dam of hydro power projects was responsible for the major flood in Assam.

Blaming NEEPCO for the recent flood fury on Golaghat district, the KMSS Chief said that hydro electric producer PSU had released excess waters from its dam of Doyang Hydroelectric Project and it had triggered massive flood in downstream Golaghat district.

According to him, 114 villages in Golaghat district were severely affected in the recent flood and there were 5 human losses due to the disaster.

"Though NEEPCO should generate 14.28 million units of electricity, it had generated 45.52 million unit of electricity. For excessive rains in Naga Hills, NEEPCO had to release excess water deposited in dams of Doyang project. The outcome was flood devastation in Golaghat district", said Gogoi.

KMSS demanded 100 percent compensation to every flood affected families. He appealed chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal to take up the Golaghat flood issue with NEEPCO

He expressed concern that even dam could create devastation then what would be the impact in downstream when excess water is released from the big dam.
