In a recent police encounter in Assam’s Tinsukia, the authorities allegedly opened fire on a linkman of the banned militant outfit United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I).

According to sources, the incident occurred during a search operation to locate hidden explosives in the region.

The youth, identified as Juman Bora from Jorhat, was shot in the left leg while attempting to evade the police during the operation.

An explosive weighing 8 kg was discovered in Mamorani , Tinsukia.

Currently, Juman Bora is receiving treatment at a non-military hospital in Tinsukia. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the matter.

Earlier on Saturday, Tinsukia police recovered around 8 kilograms of plastic explosives, along with 33 detonators and six batteries from the residence of one Hemanta Borah in Mamorani village under Digboi police station.

According to preliminary information, the police retrieved the explosive components today based on a confession given by three captured ULFA-I linkmen identified as Jumon Borah of Jorhat, Tutu Borah, and Sashankar Rajkhowa of Kordoiguri village in Tinsukia district.

Speaking to the media, Tinsukia Additional Superintendent of Police Bibhash Das said, "We got an input that there is a recruitment drive going on in the Upper Assam localities and some recruiters are being given the task to conduct the drive. Based on that information, we were able to track down one Jumon Bora of Jorhat, and during his interrogation, we learned details regarding his phone calls with ULFA-I leader Abhijit Gogoi, aka Aiseng Axom. Two more ULFA-I linkmen were held after extensive questioning. When one of the linkmen was questioned, it was discovered that the explosives were placed beneath the ground in the backyard of Hemanta Borah's home in Madhya Mamorani village.”

A joint team of Assam police, CRPF and Indian Army then reached the spot and recovered the aforementioned explosives materials.

Following the recovery, security forces had cordoned off the entire area.
