BARPETA | Historic ‘Keli kadam’ Falls in Storm

Pratidin Bureau

Monday's storm left a trail of destruction across the state, including downed power lines and trees, like one on the Barpeta Satra Campus.

'Keli kadam'- a majestic, centuries-old tree snapped at the base and was not uprooted, as per reports. An exact age for the tree could not be confirmed, it could have been just as old. No one was harmed when the tree fell, however the devotees expressed their grief as they have lost a historic icon.

The tree was a historic icon for Barpeta satra and it stood proudly before it collapsed Monday evening, prompting residents to pay tribute to its rich history.

When news of its demise broke, crowds gathered in the satra premises to decide what to do with the tree's debris.

A massive cyclonic storm Monday evening lashed most parts of Assam, including Barpeta, Chirang, Jogighopa and Tezpur.
