CAB to be tabled in Rajya Sabha today

Pratidin Bureau

With the Lok Sabha passing the most controversial Citizenship Amendment Bill on Tuesday, the government is likely to place the Bill for consideration and passage in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

The opposition is likely to use its majority in the House to create hurdles in the passage of the legislation.

"The Congress and some of its allies in the opposition-dominated Upper House are planning to demand withdrawal of the Citizenship Bill" – said Ripun Bora (President, APCC)

The Congress sources said they would "certainly gauge the dominant view of the Rajya Sabha.

"The people of Assam are now keenly observing the Indian National Congress, whether the main opposition party of the country would take a clear stand against the Citizenship Amendment Bill, which is both unconstitutional, and threatening to the secularism of India. If the Congress could not show their firmness and unitedness against the Bill, and just walkout to escape the situation, then it will expose the real character of the Congress." – said KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi.
