Congress MLAs come to Assembly wearing onion-garlands

Pratidin Bureau

In anobvious gesture aimed at highlighting the spiralling prices of onion, the MLAsof the Opposition Congress in Assam turned up at the Assembly wearing garlandsof onions on Friday.

TheCongress MLAs raised slogans and attacked the BJP-led government on the secondday of the winter session of the Assam Assembly.

"Thegrowing prices will deprive the people of their staple food. Onions, which usedto come for less than Rs. 40 a kilo, are now coming at Rs. 100 per kilo,"Congress MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi claimed.

Theyalso said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has completely lost its grip on inflation.

It may be mentioned here that during Congress-led Tarun Gogoi regime in the State, Assam BJP leaders including Prasanta Phukan and Bijoya Chakravarty staged a similar kind of protest against the price rise of onion. However, MLA Phukan on Friday said that why would he protest when he is in the government. He further said, "I am like liquid substance that easily takes the shape of that vessel, which I kept in."
