ED raids Rajesh Jalan’s close aids

Pratidin Bureau

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) of Assam, which recently arrested liquor mafia Rajesh Jalan, raided houses and commercial establishments of the mafia's close aids in Barpeta on Sunday.

The ED raided one named Rafikul Islam's apartment in Barpeta, who is brother of Rajesh Jalan's close aid Mujammil Haque.

Mujammil is an influential figure of the district for being a leader of Barpeta Congress. It is alleged that he and his brother Rafikul are involved in a multi-crore tax evasion scam along with Jalan.

The ED also raided a bonded warehouse under Rafikul's name. Following the raid, the ED team sealed the warehouse and seized a number of important documents recovered from there which can lead to major revelations in the coming days.

The ED found huge amount of liquor in the warehouse worth lakhs of rupees. Surprisingly, the warehouse was shut down following a raid by Bureau of Investigation of Economic Offences (BIEO) way back in December 2016.

From his house, the ED found and seized bank account passbooks, ATMs, agreements and contracts between Jalan and the brothers. These important documents are likely to help expedite the investigation process in this multi crore scam.
