Flood situation remains grim in Jorhat and Karimganj

Pratidin Bureau

Floodsituation in Jorhat and Karimganj remain grim as nearly 15,000 families havebeen affected by the current wave of water in both the districts.

In Jorhat, the flood situation remained serious on Tuesday. The embankment of River Bhogdoi was breached on May 22, but the administration is yet to take any action to re-construct it. However, the administration has set up relief camps, where the affected poeple are currently taking shelter. As per reports, though NDRF and SDRF had launched rescue operation of flood victims, people of several villages are still taking shelter on Bhogdoi river dyke. Notably, the rising water of Bhogdoi river had submerged a vast area of land.

On the other hand, in Karimganj, the rescue and relief operations are still on as Patharkandi and Nilambazar areas are still affected by the flood. The breach of Langai river embankment has caused massive destruction in the district. As per the locals, there was rampant corruption in the maintenance of the Langai and Singla river embankments by the water resource department that led to the breach of those embankments.
