Highway Nightmare | Pathetic condition of Assam highways

Pratidin Bureau

The NationalHighways connecting different places in Assam are in a pathetic condition.Currently, the conditions of NH-37, NH-39 and NH-15 in Assam are such that dueto increasing number of deep potholes on the highways, rainwater fills up thebroken road in a manner that it becomes difficult to guess the exact depth ofthe broken roads by the drivers.

Evenafter having reported about the pathetic conditions of the National Highwaysmany times, the situation remains as grim as before. On the other hand, newpotholes have started emerging in the highways. Many times big and smallvehicles plunge into the potholes and have to be rescued by crane.

The commuters are of the opinion that earlier the distance between Numaligarh and Jorhat was covered in 1:30 hours is now it takes around 2-2:30 hours. The highways are allegedly neglected by the government as well as the administration.

Meanwhile, Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday told the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) officials to immediately repair the damaged portion of the national highways in Assam. CM Sonowal urged the NHIDCL officials to ensure sincerity and timely execution of construction and suggested engagement of local engineers and contractors in the works.
