Indefinite curfew continues in Hailakandi

Indefinite curfew is still clamped today in violence hit Hailakandi after clashes erupted between two groups during namaaz on Friday. Army had been deployed to maintain law and order in the area.

At the same time, administration has also stopped internet services in Barak.

According to reports, around 15 persons were injured in the violence with three of them sent to Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) in critical condition. The agitated mob demolished and burned down at least 20 vehicles, including e-rickshaws and motorcycles.

CRPF and Assam Rifles have also been deployed in trouble-torn and sensitive areas.

Reportedly, a huge number of people turned out to perform the first namaaz after the start of Ramzan at a mosque at SS Road of the town. Worshipers wanted to perform prayers outside the mosque. Being stopped by the police on duty from doing so, they started pelting stones and came equipped with sticks. Later, clash erupted between two groups to prevent which the police lathicharged and fired in the air to disperse the violent mob.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has ordered an inquiry into the incident, directing Additional Chief Secretary Rajiv Bora to conduct the process.
