One of the most prolific Sculptors of Assam Dilip Bhusan Sarmah is no more. He was a heart patient.
"Today morning he suddenly fell down at the terrace in his residence and died before he could be taken to the hospital. However, He was admitted to Excel care hospital in the city (Guwahati)", a source told.
He was popularly known for his commissioned works based on life size figurative sculptures of Assam's renowned personalities like Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, Kalaguru Bishnu Rabha and many more. Along with figurative works he had also practiced on working with relief 2D & 3D art works, Landscaping, and also on Paintings.
He worked under the supervision of Lt. Pranabendu Bikash Dhar of Government Art College, Guwahati and became a self-taught artist, determined to become a sculptor. He began his career with small commissioned sculptural works by helping his senior artists to earn a living. During his later part, he developed a rare unilateral absence of a pulmonary artery and despite which he managed to work hard on his skills and gain success.
Dilip Bhusan became a cult-figure with a large following drawn from all walks of his life. The content of his work has a wide appeal and much of it is displayed in public buildings such as on entrance of national parks, hospital campus, public gardens, temple premises, and school campus etc. He even likes to sculpt on life-size portrait commissioned works as assigned to him.
