Sr.ULFA leader gets 6-year prison sentence

A senior trained cadre of ULFA(I), Gagan Hazarika alias Joydeep Cheleng, who was earlier arrested by Assam Police has been sentenced to six years in prison. The verdict was pronounced by a special NIA Court on Wednesday.

NIA said it had registered a case against the banned outfit in 2013 and "it's not an incident based, but a suo motu case."

The NIA also filed a charge sheet against Abhijit Asom and ULFA's C-in-C Paresh Baruah in a Guwahati court and accused them of "waging war against the Government of India, extorting money from government departments and private individuals and commission of terrorist attacks and other unlawful activities."

In 2017, the NIA arrested ULFA (I) leader Gagan Hazarika from Guwahati. Hazarika is a senior trained cadre, had joined the banned outfit in 2008 and acquired the rank of SS 2nd Lieutenant in ULFA (I).

The NIA has collected sufficient materials, technical as well as circumstantial evidence against the accused persons during the course of the investigation and established the allegations as mentioned above against each accused persons.

Accused Paresh Baruah has been absconding in Myanmar and Dr. Mukul Hazarika (Abhijit Asom) in United Kingdom. NIA has declared them as absconders and further course of action as per law is being initiated.
