The tough Amethi fight, Smriti vs Rahul

Pratidin Bureau

In a cut throat battle, Congress president Rahul Gandhi had fought his toughest fight till date in Amethi, the Uttar Pradesh constituency which he had been effortlessly winning since 2004, against BJP's Smriti Irani .

As counting progresses, Irani, who lost to Rahul in 2014, is seen leading with 1,04,498 votes and Congress chief trailing with 94,732 votes. Therefore, BJP is leading with 9,766 votes in the constituency.

However, the Congress chief, who also contested from Wayanad has won the seat with 5,21,598 votes.

The BJP candidate's lead can be credited to her dedicated campaign mode in the constituency with regular visits.

On the other hand, Rahul Gandhi being Congress' one of the star campaigners, only visited the constituency once during his road show before filling nominations. It was his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra who campaigned in Amethi on behalf of Rahul.

Notably, it will be a significant win for the BJP if they can acquire Amethi, as Congress only held two out of 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh, one being Amethi and the other Sonia Gandhi's constituency Rae Barelli.
