Arunachal drops four hydel projects on Ecological ground

The Arunachal government has recommended dropping four of the 21 power projects on ecological grounds, while bidding process for the rest will start soon, highly placed official source said.

The four projects are The Kameng-I (1120MW), Sangochi (12MW), Sae Chen (15 MW), Yemshing (15MW). Of them, Kameng was supposed to be constructed by NEEPCO and the three by smaller private parties.

Of them, the Kameng was the biggest while the other three are smaller projects over river Siang. All of them were dropped following red flag raised by the river basin study.

Memorandum of Associations (MOA) of all these projects were signed in 2019 and work has been halted since 2011.

However, the Arunachal Pradesh Government has started the bidding process for other 17 projects where works have been stalled for past 7-8 years.

The Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Monday made it clear that his government had scrapped these hydel projects for "non-performance' by "non-serious investors".

"We want good investors. These companies have used these hydel projects to jack up their share prices. This is a fraud with people of Arunachal Pradesh. We need good and serious investors" the Chief Minister said exclusively to Pratidin Time at Itanagar.
