Assam | Abandoned Hospital Becomes ‘Haunted House’

The Bongaon PHC is far from being a picture of good health. The health centre has been in limbo for over three years now, as permission from the state government is still pending.

Local people say almost all the work has been completed and waiting for go-ahead.

The primaryhealth centre constructed at Bongaon in Bajali has remained a non-starter since2016. Sources said though construction of the PHC is almost over, work on thehospital is yet to start. Not a single patient has been treated within itswalls.

In anycountry this might be considered a waste but perhaps even more so in Assamwhere for the majority access to affordable, quality healthcare is rare tonon-existent.

"This hospital was built by the government for the poor. The local people cooperated with the administration with love and compassion, so that the sick and the poor would have a place to get well," a local resident said.
