Assam Govt Issues Travel Advisory Over Border Dispute With Mizoram

The Assam Government on Thursday issued a travel advisory for the people of the state in view of the recent cases of "violent skirmishes" along the border areas of Assam and Mizoram.

The notification stated that the skirmishes have occurred in three districts – Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi and the clash that happened on July 26 that claimed the lives of six police personnel as well as civilians in Cachar has led the government to issue the advisory with the "purpose of ensuring safety and security" to all the people of the state.

The notification read, "…Even after the incident certain Mizo Civil Society, students and youth organisations are constantly issuing provocative statements against the state of Assam and its people. It has been reliably learnt from video footage available with Assam Police, that many civilians are heavily armed with automatic weapons etc".

Therefore, the travel advisory issued given the critical prevailing situation states:

  1. The people of Assam are advised not to travel to Mizoram as any threat to personal safety of people of Assam cannot be occupied.
  2. People of Assam, staying in Mizoram due to work related compulsion, should exercise utmost caution.

The order also stated that the advisories will come into force with immediate effect.
