A bridge in Genoa city of Italy collapsed on Tuesday which killed at least 35 people and several others injured. The head of Italian Civil Protection Agency, Angello Borelli confirmed that numbers of casualities are expected to grow further.
Borelli also confirmed that 30 vehicles and many heavy duty trucks were present when the Morandi Bridge collapsed. Many other vehicles were on the affected section of the Morandi Bridge. The bridge lies to the western part of port city Genoa.
The search and rescue mission is expected to last for days as several people are still missing.
The police report the violent storms were partly to be blamed for the collapse of the bridge. The police also said that maintenance work of the bridge was underway that could lead to the bridges collapse.
Around 440 people had to abandon their home following the bridge collapse. Eleven buildings had to be evacuated. The number of evacuated buildings could rise and the risk assessments are going on.
The motor bridge was opened on 1968 is considered to be a major highway for the residents and tourists in the city of Genoa.
