CIA official accuses China of practicing a ‘quiet kind of cold war’

USA's civilian foreign intelligence service Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has alleged that China is waging a 'quiet kind of cold war' against the US, stating that the Asian nation is using all its resources to supplant America as the world's leading superpower.

A top CIA Asian expert said that Beijing doesn't want to go to war but the government under President Xi Jingping, is working tirelessly across multiple field to undermine US's authority on global platforms. He added that China's mechanisms are more subtle and delicate than Russia's employment of well-publicized activities.

"By their own terms and what Xi enunciates I would argue by definition what they're waging against us is fundamentally a cold war, a cold war not like we saw during the Cold War, but a cold war by definition. A country that exploits all avenues of power licit and illicit, public and private, economic and military, to undermine the standing of your rival relative to your own standing without resorting to conflict. The Chinese do not want conflict," Michael Collins, deputy assistant director of the CIA's East Asia mission centre said at the Aspen Security Forum on Friday.

Collins went so far as to compare China's situation to Russia's brash annexation of the Crimean peninsula, which was widely denounced in the West.

The US has also expressed concern over China's espionage and attempt to steal academic and business secrets from the US. China also has the second-largest defense budget in the world.
