Condition of detention camps in Assam ‘inhumane’, alleges NELECC

The North East Linguistic and Ethnic Co-ordination Committee (NELECC) has alleged that the state of detention camps in Assam are inhuman and lack basic amenities while claiming that detainees were being kept in the same premises as jail inmates.

A member of the Silchar-based civil society also spoke about the issues of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and said they have met Home Minister Rajnath Singh and told him about the difficulties faced by people in detention camps.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has assured the people that the names of all 'genuine Indians' will be incorporated in the NRC. He dismissed possibilities of violence saying that adequate force will be deployed across the state to curb any breakouts.

Assam faced a flood of people from Bangladesh since the early 20th century. The subject of identification of illegal immigrants has been a controversial one in the politics of the state.
