Dismiss current NRC: Himanta tells Centre

Unhappy with the recently published National Register of Citizens (NRC), Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said that the NRC was not flawless. Addressing the media in Guwahati, the Minister further said that the Assam government has requested the Centre to reject the NRC.

Sarma said that the party has asked Union Home Minister Amit Shah to dismiss the NRC in the current form. “The Assam government has not accepted the NRC. Government of Assam and BJP have requested the Home Minister to reject the NRC,” said Sarma.

Rejecting the NRC, he also said that there should be one cut-off year for the entire country. “If the cut-off year is 1971, then it should be the same for all states,” the Minister said. He also criticised former NRC State Coordinator Prateek Hajela.

It may be mentioned here that Union Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday said in Rajya Sabha that the NRC process will be carried out again in Assam along with the rest of the country, and assured Parliament that “all citizens of India”, irrespective of religion, will figure in the list.
