The first day of the FIFA World Cup 2018 Quarter Finals ended with a bang as Uruguay and Brazil were knocked out of the tournament.

In the match at 7:30 pm (IST) at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium, France defeated Uruguay 2-0 in a swift victory that propelled the European team to the Semi-finals.

France’s prompt victory was close to being cemented as soon as Raphaël Varane scored a goal at the 40th minute and Antoine Griezmann’s long-range strike found its way into the net at the 61st minute after misjudgment on the part of the Uruguayan goalkeeper.

The verdict of the match between Brazil and Belgium was largely unanticipated as Belgium won 2-1 and the five time world champions were cast off the tournament.

The match left all the jaws hanging around the world as Brazilian footballer Fernandinho scored a goal in his own net at the 13th minute, thus scoring the point for the Belgians. Kevin de Bruyne scored the second goal of the game at the 31st minute, cementing Belgium’s upper hand.

Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois thwarted countless offences by Brazil before Renato Augusto scored one for his team at the 76th minute.

The France-Belgium play-off match is on July 10 at 11:30 pm at Saint Petersburg Stadium.
