FIR against Himanta for ‘pro-Bangladesh’ slogans

Former general secretaries of Cotton University Students’ Union (CUSU) on Tuesday evening filed an FIR against Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at the Panbazar Police Station for chanting ‘pro-Bangladesh’ slogans in the floor of Assam assembly during the ongoing session.

Terming him ‘notorious’, the general secretaries alleged, “Such utterance by the accused person has the potential to promote enmity between different groups residing in the state on the ground of race and language.” The former general secretaries included Amlanjyoti Dewry, Jintu Thakuria, Pranjal Kalita, Deepjyoti Das, Rajshekhar Kalita and Hirakjyoti Borah.

It may be mentioned here that the minister chanted the slogans when some opposition MLAs were protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in the assembly.

The former general secretaries also alleged that this was not the only instance that Himanta has made such remarks. “Through series of remarks he has been trying to create division in the society with his passing through a fragile existence.” they further added.

They requested to initiate an investigation regarding the incident and to arrest him under Section 153 (A) of IPC.
