Akhil Gogoi is on a hunger strike in the Guwahati Central Jail on Thursday.
Gogoi is the founder Secretary of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) and has been fasting since Thursday morning.
The peasant leader is on a hunger strike to demand to resolve various problems inside the jail specifically for the basic human rights for the prison inmates. He asserted there were hardly any health or safety facilities for inmates amid the ongoing outbreak of COVID-19. He said he has approached the jail authorities repeatedly but there has been no response.
Gogoi was sent to judicial custody after being produced at the National Investigation Agency's special court on April 23.
