Jharkhand Election: 1 dead in Police Firing at Polling Booth

A villager was killed while two others sustainedinjuries at a polling booth in Jharkhand's Sisai assembly segment on Saturdayafter police opened fire to control a mob pelting stones.

The police officer-in-charge of Sisai police station, two constables, a journalist, and eight others have also sustained injuries in the stone-pelting incident.

The deceased villager has been identified as GilaniAnsari.

The incident took place at booth number 36 in Badhnivillage under Gumla district.

Jharkhand's chief electoral officer Vinay Choubey saidthat villagers tried to snatch arms from Rapid Protection Force (RPF) deployedat the polling booth. In order to control the mob, police had to open fire inwhich one person died and two others received bullet injuries on thigh andshoulder. They are reportedly out of danger and have been shifter to Ranchihospital, said Choubey.

He further added that voting has been stopped at thesaid booth and there is a probability of conducting re-polling on this boothwhich will be announced soon.

Police, however, said that supporters of two differentpolitical parties entered into a brawl at the booth. Police personnel deployedthere interfered but they picked up a fight with the forces as well.

Officials said that villagers started snatching armsfrom police and pelted stones on them compelling the forces to launch crackdownin self-defence.

Voting for the second phase of Jharkhand Assembly Election 2019 in 20 assembly constituencies began at 7 am on Saturday.

In Sisai, the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP's)candidate and assembly Speaker Dinesh Oraon is in a direct fight with JMM'snominee Jigga Susaran Horo.
