Kaziranga Authorities Gears Up To Tackle Flood

The Kaziranga National Park authorities have geared upto tackle the flood as the Brahmaputra River was flowing above the danger leveldue to torrential rains.

The Park famous for its one-horned rhino shuts fortourists in May so that the officials can prepare for the flood season.

Talking to a news agency, Park Director P. Shiv Kumarsaid that they are ready for the flood season. He said that they have completedrepairing all the 200 highlands inside the park where the animals can takeshelter. "Meetings were held with NGOs working in and around the park as wellas with the local villagers so that the animals can be saved and helped duringa high flood like situation," said Kumar.

The Central Water Commission (CWC) on Monday informedthat the Brahmaputra River is flowing above the danger level at Nimatighat,Dhansiri while the Jia Bharali River was overflowing at some places in Sonitpurdistrict. Kaziranga is bound by the Brahmaputra on its northern end.

The Director said that they are expecting the floodwaters to enter the park on Tuesday as there have been rains in the uppercatchment areas in Arunachal Pradesh but the waters take at least 48 hours toreach the park. The authorities are ready and have taken all the necessaryprecautions so that it could deal with every tense situation.

It has also been informed that they have also startedto implement a speed limit on the National Highway 37 that touches the southernboundary of the park. The park authorities have also asked the commuterspassing from through the area from Jakhalabandha to Numaligarh have been askedto keep their speed limit maximum to 40km/hour so that no animal is hit whilecrossing the road.

According to official data, over 360 animals drowneddue to the floods in Kaziranga in 2017 out of which 31 were rhinos.
