Centre will attempt to pass the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in Parliament by December 10.
The influential North East Students' Organization (NESO), called for a northeast bandh on December 10 to protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016.
The bandh will be in force from 5 am to 4 pm, NESO said. However, the NESO has exempted Nagaland from the bandh due to the ongoing Hornbill Festival in Kohima and students of the state will stage protests in front of Raj Bhavan there.
The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill is likely to be introduced in the Lok Sabha on December 9 and will be taken up for passage the next day (December 10).
Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharyya, the chief advisor of the North East Students Union (NESO) and All Assam Students Union (AASU) told a press conference here on Saturday that the 11-hour bandh was called by the united organisation (NESO) to oppose the Bill.
"We oppose the objective of the Bill and it should not be adopted by Parliament under any circumstances. Such an undesirable step by Parliament will once again agitate the entire North East region. We all have a responsibility to avoid such a potentiality," : NESO added.
The NESO, which consist of All Arunachal Pradesh Student's Union (AAPSU), All Assam Students' Union (AASU), All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU), Naga Students' Federation (NSF), Khasi Students' Union (KSU), Garo Students' Union (GSU), Mizo Zirlai Paul (MZP), Twipura Students' Federation (TSF) represents the students' community of the entire region belonging to different languages and religions.
