Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma allayed all fears of a negative impact on the indigenous people of the Northeast if the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) is pushed through by the Union Government.
"When the Bill finally comes up for discussion in the Parliament… Assam, Northeast and the entire country will welcome it. The protest is not up to its expectations", Sarma said.
"People are opposing, no doubt. 99% of the indigenous organizations are opposing but there have been discussions as well", he said.
With several northeast groups raising their voice against the NDA government's plan to introduce the Citizenship Amendment Bill in the winter session, the NDA leaders have been trying to explain the nuances of the Bill.
Responding to questions, Finance Minister Himanta BiswaSarma said the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) takes care of Indigenous people'sinterests.
He also said that the meetings between regional organizations in the state have a positive impact on society and after it (CAB) is passed by the Parliament it will have more positive impact on the people.
"It will become very clear that the indigenous people of theregion are well protected and are given all kinds of support by the Governmentof India", Sarma added.
