As the Centre is ready to introduce the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) in the winter session of the Parliament which started on Monday, the North East Forum for Indigenous People (NEFIP) has announced the resumption of mass agitation against it from today.

The executive committee of the NEFIP decided that eachfederating unit at the state level has been allowed to decide as per their conveniencesand understanding regarding the mode of agitation on Monday and Tuesday.

According to sources, the confederation of Meghalaya SocialOrganizations (CoMSO) will organize night road blockade in Meghalaya onNovember 18 and 19.

According to reports, the blockade will start at 7 pm on November 18 till 6 am on November 19 which will again resume at 7 pm on November 19 till 6 am on November 20.

However, protests erupt in all parts of Assam and other parts of the Northeastern region against the contentious citizenship bill which seeks to grant Indian citizenship to non-Muslim immigrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.

According to a press release issued by the forum, it said, "Inspite of giving any heed to our incessant protests and prayer in the form ofmemorandum, the same Bill is going to be introduced in the forthcoming WinterSession of the Parliament 2019 undermining the aspirations and legitimaterights of the indigenes of the region."

It further stated that to recognize such illegal immigrants as 'natural persons' who can acquire Indian Citizenship on the basis of religious identity runs antithetical to the Constitution.
