The Assam Police headquarters in Guwahati has put on hold transfers and leave applications of police personnel at various levels to maintain maximum possible strength on the ground till the publication of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
This also includes the Indian Police Service (IPS) officers and the other higher rank officials. The total strength of IPS officers in the Assam Police as on today is 109 compared to the sanctioned strength of 135.
Further, the police department has also put an embargo on all kinds of leave applications of the men-in-khakis, unless it is a case of extreme personal or medical emergency.
Sources told Pratidin Time that the SPs of all the districts have been asked to keep the maximum possible strength at their disposal in view of the second and final draft publication of the NRC scheduled for July 30.
The Assam Police had sought 100 companies of paramilitary forces from the Ministry of Home Affairs in view of the NRC publication
