NRC | 25,000 reach Upper Assam For ‘Re-verification’

More than 25,000 people from lower Assam districts of Barpeta, Golapara and Dhubri have reached various Upper Assam districts travelling overnight to attend the verification of the NRC.

Meanwhile in 28 of them travelling to Golaghat met with an accident and one died and now in GMC for treatment.

This has been viewed as inhumane and harassment as all of them were serve notices on Saturday and by the morning of Monday, they have reached Golaghat, Sibsagar, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia.

Various organisations like KMSS and Brahmaputra Valley civil society have termed this type of verification as harassment and urged the NRC authorities to do it within the district as thousands of poor people had to travel more than 600 kilometres for the hearing.

On the other hands, the reverification also killed the perception that NRC authorities were taking the state, legislature and the Supreme Court for a ride by not doing enough.

The last 24 hours of development also killed the list of NRC exclusions leaked by the Assam Government in the Assam Assembly.

The state NRC authorities have called thousands of people, whose names have already been included in the final draft NRC Assam, for 're-verification' of their citizenship documents at various centres across the state.

As per reports, in several LACs, notably Chenga, Barpeta, Goalpara West, Chaygaon and Boko, numerous people have been issued notices as late as 3rd and 4th August and asked to attend NRC related hearings on August 5 in far-off places like Golaghat, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji.

Meanwhile, the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) on Sunday alleged genuine Indian citizens are being harassed in the name of the updating process of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam slammed NRC State Coordinator Prateek Hajela alleging undue harassment has been faced by several people across the State, particularly religious and linguistic minorities in the process of hearing of claims and objections.

Islam apprised that people were being called to faraway places for hearing of claims and objections, causing mental, physical and financial harassment.
