On-Duty GMC Workers Assaulted By Miscreants

In an unusual incident, a group of miscreants misbehaved and assaulted officials of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) in a city neighbourhood creating hindrance in the lawful discharge of duties by public servants.

The incident occurred at Jonali in Zoo Road when GMC workers were engaged in cleaning of roads and sewages at Zoo Road, Jonali.

An official release from GMC read that around 11:00 p.m. on Tuesday, a group of 4-5 persons got off from a Swift Desire bearing no. AS01HC5235 and threw garbage at the main road in front of a shop M/s Junali Electricals.

"At the same time, Satyajyoti Baruah, ACS, Joint Commissioner-I, GMC, along with other officials of GMC, were inspecting the conservancyy works of GMC. The GMC officials tried to restrain them from throwing garbage in the street and tried to make them understand the hard work that officials and workers of GMC are undertaking to keep the city clean," the release stated.

Instead, they argued and threatened to repeat similar brawls in the future.

One of the employees of GMC, Nagen Kalita, tried to visually document the entire incident but they started using filthy language and physically assaulted him, the release said.

They even threatened to break the mobile phone and throw it away and fled away in the car. However, one of the miscreants has been identified as Asish Sarkar.

As per the release, Sarkar is a resident of House No. 72, Jonali, Zoo-Road. He is also the landlord of the shop M/s Junali Electricals.

The incident has been reported in Gitanagar Police Station by lodging an FIR on Wednesday to enquire the matter and take necessary and appropriate steps as per the provisions of law.

Further, GMC has also initiated necessary action in this regard. The suspension of the trade licence of M/s Junali Electricals is underway.
