The prices of onion have jumped by up to 50 percent to 70 percent in the last one month in different markets in Guwahati. According to reports, onion is currently trading at Rs. 50 per kg to Rs. 55 per kg compared to Rs. 35 one month ago.
Guwahati’s Fancy Bazar, Kacharighat, Uzanbazar, Beltola, Six Mile market among others were found with high onion prices. However, Minister of Food & Civil Supplies Phani Bhusan Choudhury was not seen taking any measures regarding the development.
“Arrivals of early-season crops are low this year from Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka, due to flood there. Also, Kharif crop is reported to have severely damaged in States like Maharashtra and Gujarat. All these factors are contributing to the current price rise,” said an onion wholesaler in Guwahati.
This rising price of onion has become a serious matter of concern for the residents of Guwahati.
