The police on Sunday detained more than two hundred protesters in Guwahati. They were taking part in the protest March, which was called by Bhumi Adhikar Sangram Samiti (BASS) demanding land patta for the indigenous people of the State.
The detainees included senior journalist Adip Phukan, Padma Shri Ajoy Kumar Dutta and several women protesters. The protesters shouted slogans against the government and demanded land patta for the indigenous people in Guwahati.
“The government had assured us of giving land pattas, but that assurance remains to be met,” said a protester. “The government is playing a dirty politics in the issuance of land pattas to the indigenous families in the State. Before the panchayat poll, the government provided land pattas to a selected few and some of BJP members in Guwahati,” alleged another protester.
