Parliament ready to take up C’ship Bill and others

During the month-long winter session, the Parliament will take up the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019. The winter session will start on Monday. The winter session will provide a total of 20 sitting spread over a period of 26 days till December 13.

The Citizenship Bill is one of BJP's key agenda. The bill seeks to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955 to make Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, and Christian illegal migrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, eligible for citizenship of India.

The BJP-led NDA government had introduced the bill in its previous tenure but could not push it through due to vehement protests by various organisations in Assam as well as in the Northeast. The bill had lapsed following the dissolution of the last Lok Sabha.

Meanwhile, other key bills such as Personal Data Protection Bill, 2019, Anti MaritimePiracy Bill 2019 and Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill, 2019 areamong the 47 items expected to be taken up during the House proceedings.
