Plane crash victim’s body found after 50 years in glacier

The body of a 1968 Indian Air Force (IAF) plane crash victim was unearthed in Dhaka glacier base camp in Himachal Pradesh. A mountaineering expedition retrieved the body on July 1.

During a cleanliness drive organised by the Indian Mountaineering Foundation, the mountaineering team visited the Chandrabhaga-13 peak and came across the aircraft wreck and found the body. They also found some more parts of the aircraft.

An aircraft AN-12 of the Indian Air Force had been flying from Chandigarh to Leh on February 7, 1968 when the pilot decided to turn back due to bad weather. The aircraft had been reportedly carrying 102 personnel on board.

The aircraft had abruptly lost signal and went missing. It later crashed in the Lahaul valley in Himachal Pradesh. Decades later, in 2003, during an expedition, the remains of that plane were recovered in the Dhaka glacier.
