The Election Commission has served a show-cause notice to the BJP nominee from Sojat assembly constituency in this district of Rajasthan, for reportedly making statement in favour of child marriage.

In a bid to outperform the other political parties in the general election next year and assembly elections in a number of states in December, political parties have been making tall claims and some totally outlandish promises.

Pertaining to this, Sobha Chauhan was addressing a gathering at a Sneh Sammelan at the Peepaliya Kala region in Sojat area during which she promised the people of her constituency that she would ensure child marriages are not acted against if she is voted to power.

Chauhan's words were recorded in a video, which went viral, that captured her promising to the members of the Dewasi community present there, who faced interference from the police during child marriages, that she would not let anything of this sort happen.

"We have 'satta' [power] and 'sangathan' [state government] at our disposal. We won't let the police intervene in child marriages," she is seen saying in the video.

Thereafter, the statement has stirred a nationwide controversy.

The Returning Officer, issued the notice to Chauhan, two days ago, official sources said on Sunday.
Time-old practice of child marriage still prevails in some pockets of the state in its diminishing form.
