Three sadhus had been rescued from getting lynched by a mob on Thursday by army personnel and local police in Mahur Railway Station in Dima Hasao district of Assam.
District officials stated that Army soldiers posted nearby and policemen came to the rescue of the three persons yesterday after a mob of hundreds of people threw open the belongings of the men, made a video of the same and shared it on social media in the wake of rumors of child-lifting in the area.
The district administration, following the incident, called for an emergency meeting that was attended by representatives of different communities. Appeals were made to the public to act responsibly, not to believe in rumors circulated on social media and not to take the law into their own hands.
The district administration advised the people to contact the authorities in case of suspicious movement of any person.
A similar incident took place on June 8 when two friends who had gone to a picnic spot in Karbi Anglong were beaten to death by a mob on suspicion of being child-lifters.
